Most experts agree that the first, most important step of any gynecological exam is the consultation - a talk between you and your doctor. This is particularly important if you only see your gynecologist once a year, for an annual exam.

Ideally, this should take place in the consultation area of  your doctor's office,  while you are still fully dressed. This is important since many women find it much easier to discuss intimate problems in this atmosphere.

During this chat -time you should bring up any symptoms you may have discovered on your own, as well as any complaints you may have about your V zone, and your overall health. Hopefully you can take a moment while still at home to jot down your questions - so you don't forget anything once you are in your doctor's office.

This is also the time when you should ask your doctor any potentially "embarassing"  V zone questions you may have.. Indeed, most women find they are less intimidated about asking questions in this more formal environment, as compared to when they are lying in an uncompromised GYN exam position.  If you give it a try you may be surprised to disocover how easy it can be to talk to your doctor, even about difficult subjects.

Once this discussion takes place, and you are satisfied with the answers your doctor provides, you can proceed to the phyiscal portion of your exam.
